5 Steps to Starting Your Side Income

Take my money gif

One of the biggest regrets I hear solopreneurs say is that they wish they had started earlier.

Now I don't say this lightly- but I believe everyone should have a side hustle. And before you say I don’t have time or I don’t need one - think about this.

- Amazon just cut 18,000 jobs, Google laid off 12,000 workers, and Paypal reduced its workforce by 7%.

However, the goal isn't to quit your job - but rather to use your writing skills to invest in yourself and side hustles are a great way to add extra income with the possibility of it becoming a career.

While there is no “right way” or "one way", I've found these 8 steps relatively easy to set up. Take a look and see if it's something you could do.

1/ Ditch the "myth of being an expert"

Most people are scared to start their side hustle because they think they have to be an “expert”. The truth is you just need to know how to help others to achieve what you have already.

Make a list of your accomplishments, big and small. You can include your work skills and interests, and hobbies.

What experience do you have that others can learn from?

What experience do you have that others would be happy to pay for?

What knowledge do you have that can help others achieve their goals?

2/ Identify your interests

It doesn't have to be a professional skill - remember this is something you are going to have to research, write and talk about so choose something you'll enjoy talking and writing about.

Is there something that your colleagues come to you for? or are there projects at work that your boss often sends your way? Maybe you're the go-to Excel spreadsheets person or the graphic designer, layout, finance etc - you get the idea.

What is something my family and friends often ask me for help with? for instance: quick dinner recipes, exercise plans, nutrition tips, car mechanics etc.

You’ll have quite a few but you need to narrow it down. Consider what skills you can monetise and make sure it's something they can’t just google.

3/ Use Social Media to find your target audience and establish your credibility

Your goal is to find people who want to learn your skill and one of the best places to start is by using a social media platform.

Create your social media profile and build your credibility in your area of focus.

Find a platform that play to your strengths, For example Twitter and Linkedin are well-suited for those who love to write whereas visual creatives may choose Instagram, Tik Tok or YouTube

Don't just choose topics that interest you - think about what your audience wants to read.

It may seem simplistic but start posting content that shows you understand your customers. What's the one main problem they need solved and create content that provides the solution?

4/ Build your 1st digital product

Once you have an established social media following you can start to consider creating a simple digital product for your 1st "income" stream.

Focus on the most common questions your target audience wants to be solved.

Create a pdf, template, guide, checklist, script or video.

Give it a title that tells your audience what it's for. The best ones include numbers and results.

ie: 5 Gluten-free recipes for picky eaters

How to get better sleep in 2 days

And the best ones include 2 numbers

How 1 post got me 20 clients

How I got 500 followers in 3 days

What you want to do is take someone from 1 problem to 1 solution quickly

Depending on your end goal for those who want to create a business you can use it as a lead magnet to build a subscriber email list or you can use it to generate a little income.

Price it reasonably to build trust. You're not aiming to get rich. Your goal is to build your experience, help others, and get established.

5/ Promote it

Create a simple landing page or use Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Sellfy. add the link to your social media bio and promote it.

Build interest - Give it away free for 24 hours and ask for reviews

You could happily end here - and carry on with your 9-5 earning a small income by adding more digital products and promoting it on your social media or if you intended on creating a business. you can use it as a lead magnet to build your email list.

Of course, this is a very simple walkthrough but it gives you an idea of what you can do with a little bit of time and experience.

Do you know someone who would love to get better at communicating and writing?

Invite your friends to sign up using the link or share directly on your social.
